Me, Myself and Aspergers: Coping as an Aspie in a Non-Aspie World
Thursday, April 17, 2008
The third event in MOVAN’s Aspergers Every Day forum focused on bringing individuals with Aspergers—and their families--together in an Aspie-friendly environment. The focus of the evening was on the positive characteristics shared by many Aspergers individuals. Opening with a presentation that included several famous and successful people who are suspected to have been Aspergers individuals; such as Albert Einstein, Carl Sagan, Marie Curie, and Thomas Jefferson; the entire group were presented with 20 first-rate ways to describe Aspies and 11 self-affirmation statements for Aspies (see "tonight is different" presentation listed below). Throughout the evening, there were plenty of items within reach for sensory stimulation…small squishy balls, wood puzzles, chenille strips and large rubber bands.
After a brief introduction and presentation, the attendees broke into three groups: teenagers with Aspergers, parents and/or partners of Aspergers individuals, and adults with Aspergers. Each group talked about topics that were of specific interest to them.
Results of the event were very positive. About a dozen teenagers who came to the event expressed a desire to get together each month—while their parents attend the regular MOVAN meeting—to play games and “hang out.” The group will be moderated by Sue Lamp, a counselor who served as a panel member in session #2.
Additionally, some adults who gathered expressed an interest in getting together occasionally, plus some exchanged contact information.
The MOVAN online forum was introduced at the event.
